One of the fun parts about working on old buildings is trying to figure out their history. According to articles from The Glouster Press, the building was originally a post office and was sold to the New First National Bank on Tuesday September 11. 1906. The bank was commissioned (unsure if that’s the correct word for it) on November 2, 1906, by the Comptroller of Currency. Renovations were made to the building including a vault and a new front face. The First National Bank opened on Monday, January 14, 1907, and H. Shumate Dentist operated on the second story. I thought the building was constructed at the end of 1906 for the bank, but it seems it is older than that! Looks like I have more digging to do. Working to demolish the second story framing as I will need to replace all of the second story floor joists. Not an easy process with all of the plaster and metal lath. I am attempting to salvage any of the wood trim to use in the renovated space.
